Dental Sealants

What are dental sealants

A sealant is a material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—premolars and molars. This special material bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the outer surface of the tooth from plaque and acids. Sealants remain fixed on the tooth surface and provide consistent protection of the dental hard structure.

Procedure

Application of the dental sealant is an easy and simple procedure that allows you to get back to your normal routine within an hour. There are no restrictions on eating or chewing your favorite foods after the application of the sealant. The sealant has a liquid consistency in order to ensure that it covers the pits and fissures completely. However, fluids will not wash away the sealant, which is effective for a long period of time.

Benefits of dental sealants

  • Protects teeth from the dental decay
Stop demineralization of the tooth structure in mildly infected teeth
  • Prevents plaque and calculus (or tartar) formation on the tooth surface
  • Protects newly erupting teeth, as they are easily prone to bacterial attacks
  • Extremely beneficial for cavity-prone dental structures like crooked teeth and an oral environment having reduced salivary flow.
